In Ireland in the 1990s, the only way for adolescents who were attracted to their own gender to integrate was to deny themselves. Who is unable or unwilling to do so becomes the target of constant ridicule. This is bored by the rebellious schoolgirl, Amber, who longs for liberal London, who thinks: with the gay guy at school, they will indulge in a straight couple so that everyone can finally shut up.
Director David Freyne once wore the same shoes as his heroes. That’s why Randi’s comedy with Amber is meant to be a kind of love letter for any current teenager who, living in a small town, feels they should run away to finally be themselves.
