The Georgian-Swedish drama And Then We Danced was adored by audiences in Cannes, Called by Your Name as a Georgian counterpart, and was also nominated for an Oscar in the Best Foreign Language Film category.
The Georgian-Swedish co-production was shot in Tbilisi by director Levan Akin, who has Georgian roots but lives and works in Sweden, and the film is about a gay ballet dancer in a strongly male-centered and conservative environment – making it Georgia’s first LGBTQ-themed film.
For this reason, the local Orthodox Church in Georgia, as well as the country’s ultraconservative groups, attacked it, calling its subject outrageous. And especially that, according to the film, gay Georgian men do exist.
